Not all dogs are inside dogs. Some dog owners choose to let their pets live outside. Living outside without a safe, weather proofed, extensive living area is not only dangerous it may be down right miserable for your dog.

In this article we’ll talk about five ways to build your own outdoor dog kennel without breaking the bank to provide your dog with an enjoyable, safe, weather proofed, outdoor living area.

We have a lot to cover so let’s dive right in…

Tip #1: Semi-Homemade Dog Kennel

Many dog owners have found it more cost effective to build onto a littler pre-made outdoor dog kennel.

Think of it like an addition to your dog’s house.

If you plan it correctly starting out with a littler kennel then adding on by building on to the kennel may save you cash in the long run.

Tip #2: Use Alternate Materials

As far as I recognise you don’t have to use chain link or steel to build an outdoor dog kennel.

Other substitute materials are PVC, wood, and chicken wire.

Use your ability to create and look around professional kennels to get ideas for your own kennel system.

Tip #3: Pre-plan for Space and Growth

Giving your dog sufficient room to move around and get galore exercise for the duration of the day is necessary to a good outdoor dog kennel set up.

Pre-plan and pre-define how much space you want to use so you know how much material you will need to efficaciously cover that space.

The best set ups grant the dog 20-30 feet of running room and are 10-20 feet in width.

Tip #4: Use Nylon Panels to Create Walls

If you determine to use chain link fencing to build your kennel getting a good deal of nylon panels for walls and a roof is an lowpriced weather proofing solution.

Nylon panels may be washed, they are breathable, and they provide shelter from the sun and block the wind better than an open chain link design.

Tip #5: Designing a Cost Effective Roof

You will find there as some choices for putting a roof on your kennel as there are for what to build a kennel out of.

Three proven roof solutions that are both effective and lowcost are:

a) Plywood

b) Tarp

c) Canvas

In the end your outdoor dog kennel set up ought to be competent to withstand the elements, provide your dog a safe place to sleep (adding a dog house is a good idea), keep your dog safe from strangers and other animals, and unable to escape. We don’t want our best friend to get hit by a car or a heap of other accident.

5Terrific dog house used as a cat shelter!
By Cynthia Ann Simpson
I bought this and had great customer service on it plus it is very well constructed. It has great insulation with two small viewing windows. Excellent insulated hole for adding electrical cord/heater. The swing door is very unique. I was impressed and am using it for feral cats during the winter. I would highly recommend this product.

5great dog house (cats in my case)
By pat
I have a lot of outdoor cats. This house is sturdy, easy to move, easy to clean.
looks nice. I think it is perfect. I don’t think a big dog would fit in it, medium would work.
I have 3 of these. The older houses look just like the new and I have had them for 2 or more years.

5AWESOME dog house
By ksprincess
This is the BEST investment I have made for my dogs. It truly keeps them several degrees cooler/warmer than the weather outside the house. Don’t let the price scare you. It is well-made, easy to clean, has small vent windows that can be open/closed for changing seasons, drain hole in bottom, etc. I use a heated pet mat in the house and my pug and weiner dog stayed toasty outside all winter long in below-freezing temps at times. Definitely worth the money. It is nearly three years old now and doing great.
