5An Affair To Remember
By H. F. Corbin
Published in 1965, Donald Windham’s TWO PEOPLE is a fine, unassuming novel that slips up on you, quietly making a statement on a controversial topic then and now, the love between a man and a boy. Forrest is a young American businessman alone in Rome when the novel opens. His wife has just returned to the states after the two of them had a disagreement, and Forrest is not exactly sure why it happened. He keeps seeing a beautiful young Italian youth wearing a white raincoat around the Spanish Steps. Eventually the “two people”–such a simple though enigmatic title– go to Forrest’s rented apartment where they begin a physical relationship that would pass the censorship of all but the most puritanical of maiden aunts– the language is as tame as “when they had made love”– except for one small detail: Forrest is 34, twice as old as Marcello who is only 17.

4not the typical gay novel for today
By canoeguy
It is a period piece about an affair between an American in Rome and an eighteen year old youth. The American is married. His wife has returned to the US due to tensions in the relationship. The youth is having issues of his own with his father. It is the story of their affair and written in the style of the late 50′s early 60′s when such a relationship was talked of only in hushed whispers let alone to be “shared” in print. Well worth the read for an example of early gay literature.
